Sony BRC-Z700 Camera

Sony BRC-Z700 Camera

Sony BRC-Z700 combines a high picture quality HD 3 CMOS camera with pan/tilt/zoom mechanism, wrapped in a sleek, compact body. Like its other family members, the BRC-300 and the BRC-H700, the BRC-Z700 can also be ceiling mounted. The BRC-Z700 supports simultaneous outputs of analog HD Y/Pb/Pr output as well as Y/C and composite in Standard Definition (SD). It is also equipped with a slot for optional cards to adapt to diverse needs. By inserting the optional BRBK-HSD1 card into this slot, High Definition SDI (HD-SDI) as well as down converted SD SDI output is possible by proper selection (not simultaneously). For HD optical multiplex remote operation, the BRC-Z700 requires a new BRBK-MF1 board. Boards used with the existing BRC-H700 camera are NOT compatible with the BRC-Z700. When used with the BRU-H700 HD optical multiplex unit, the BRC-Z700 in combination with the new BRBK-MF1 board, can transmit uncompressed digital data without deterioration through the CCFC-M100HG HD optical fiber cable. The same RM-BR300 remote controller currently used with the BRC-300 and BRC-H700 cameras can also be used with the BRC-Z700. The RM-BR300 can simultaneously control up to 7 cameras from a distance.

Sony UP-DR200

Sony UP-DR200
More capacity, more speed, low print cost and a single paper for both matte and glossy prints come to us in the new Sony UP-DR200. And it introduces a paper that is similar in texture to traditional photography paper. It prints in four sizes (3.5x5, 4x6, 5x7 and 6x8) in a hurry, knocking out 4x6 prints at a rate of 450 per hour. That's clipping along at a print every 8 seconds, or a 5x7 in about 10.5 seconds. The workhorse also holds 30 percent more prints on a roll, i.e. 700 prints per roll at 4x6. It replaces the UP-DR150.

For events or commercial applications, this one would be hard to beat.

Easy handling

Paper roll and ink ribbon handling are easier than ever before. Simply open the front door and insert the roll of paper and the ribbon. The printing surface is on the inside of the paper roll, helping to prevent fingerprints during the insertion and eliminate curling of the roll and wasted feed.

Trouble-free printing
Jam-free roll paper and spooled ink ribbons
Dust remover roller in printer
Front menu keys are covered
Power switch on the back
USB and power cables an be securely fastened

Ships with: Software driver for Microsoft Windows, XP Professional and Windows Vista, output tray, output tray adapter, scrap receptacle, cleaning ribbon, ribbon tray, paper core, paper adapter (one blue, one pink), USB cable, CD-ROM (including driver software and on-line manual), softwarelicense agreement, warranty card, service and customer information, AC power cord
Note: Printing time may vary depending on the printing conditions. Print time does not include processing time.

Sony Ericsson W350i

Sony Ericsson W350i

The Walkman series has a long and illustrious history that started with the cassette based Walkman back in the 1980s. The brand eventually made its way onto a new wave of Sony Ericsson phones, where it continues to thrive. We take a look at the next product bearing the Walkman legacy, the Sony Ericsson W350i.

A Little Beautiful Package
There is a certain sense of minimalist chic about the W350i due to a simple design that exudes elegance. Our Electric Black model is lined with thin orange metallic streaks on the borders, punctuated in the middle with a circle. It is also small and compact, weighing a mere 80 grams and measuring only 1 cm thick. However, due to its petite nature, some trimmings had to be removed to accommodate its size.

The placement of its proprietary connector for the headphones on the left profile of the phone makes it slightly unwieldy to listen to music, which also contributed to awkward moments when we tried to do some track selection on the phone. Additionally, the slightly stiff and slippery keypad did make texting slightly cumbersome, but this was easily rectified by prolonged use. The inclusion of a separate lock to the Walkman function is pretty nifty though, as this removed the need to unlock the entire phone to change the track. The phone can also play music without a SIM card, letting you use it purely as a MP3 player.

The W350i is a flip phone (quite a rarity these days) but its flap neither protects the screen nor conceals the keypad; it just locks or unlocks the phone. However, the flap features one of the unique selling points of the W350i, the Walkman on Top Function. The Walkman on Top function utilizes 'buttons' (which are really pressure points that contacts the keypad below) on the flap, so you can control your music without having the need to unlock the actual phone. Considering that the flap makes it cumbersome when trying to SMS, the choice of this on the W350i is questionable. Gimmicky or innovative? You decide.

AgfaPhoto DC-8338i - digital camera

AgfaPhoto DC-8338i - digital camera

We have not reviewed this product but here is CNET's buying advice on Digital cameras. This content was chosen based on the features included with this model of digital camera.

Aperture-priority
Aperture-priority is an automated exposure mode that will allow the photographer to set the aperture, and the camera will then set the appropriate shutter speed based on the light meter reading. In this way, a photographer can control depth of field easily and create images with selective focus. This works well when you have a distracting or unattractive background that you want to keep out of focus, or just want to have more creative options in your images.
See more Aperture-priority products

Shutter-priority
Shutter-priority is an automated exposure mode that will allow the photographer to set the shutter speed, and the camera will then set the appropriate aperture based on the light meter reading. Fast shutter speeds are ideal for capturing sharp images of high speed events, such as sports and other high action occasions. Slow shutter speeds can be set to get artistic blur in images, such as moving water or car taillights at night. Using shutter-priority will allow such flexibility while providing good exposure for your photos.

Smart screens Media Device by Haier

LAS VEGAS—AOL and Chinese manufacturer Haier showed a Wi-Fi-packing, hard-drive-based music and video player with a touch-pad interface at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2007) today.

The "Smart screens Media Device by Haier," a metal box about the size of an iPod, has a simple, text-based interface navigated by skimming your finger over a touch pad below the gadget's screen. It works with Windows Media music stores like Napster, Rhapsody, and Yahoo! and plays MPEG4 and WMV videos over wired or Bluetooth wireless headphones. The model we saw had a 30GB hard drive—the same size as Apple's entry-level iPod.

Owners will be able to stream free Internet radio stations or download music from an online service through Wi-Fi 802.11g, said Joe DeAngelis, director of market development at AOL. While they're listening to music, owners will get suggestions for additional songs, albums and similar artists powered by the Internet-based service.

DeAngelis kept just barely avoiding saying that AOL would provide the service, saying instead that "our long-range plans are to come up with an offer that's really compelling … in the longer term, we're looking at filling out the content lineup."

About five years ago, a little company called Wildseed had a radical idea. They built the first mass-market Linux phone, a super-configurable head-turner called the Curitel Identity that changed its personality when you snapped a "Smart Skin" cover onto it. Smart Skins held chips with data that added content, altered the phone's user interface, and even changed the phone's functionality—one of the 26 skins, for instance, turned it into a handheld gaming system.

But Wild seed had tremendous trouble bringing the idea to market. First they arranged a contract with manufacturer Kyocera, but that exploded in a shower of lawsuits in 2003. They then went back to the drawing board and ended up with the Identity, which was never produced in sufficient quantities to be affordable to its teen target market and ended up on only one regional carrier, Dobson Cellular.

AOL bought Wild seed, and they decided not to make any more phones and instead focused on the Smart Screens platform: a Linux-based content delivery and application framework. The Smart screens Media Device is the latest result. Unlike their last effort, though, the former Wild seeders don't need to sell their product to a picky wireless carrier; instead, they have the power of a zillion-dollar media company behind them.

The Smart screens platform is a "framework that allows the flexible incorporation of different applications," DeAngelis says, so both enthusiastic programmers and formal partners may be able to add applications to the gadget. After all, it's running Linux.

Intel's NetBurst architecture

It is now perfectly clear that Intel’s NetBurst architecture didn’t turn out to be as successful as intended. Although Intel’s engineers aimed at frequencies up to 10 gigahertz as they were designing the Pentium 4 processor series, the practical implementation of these plans proved to be impossible. They just couldn’t keep the processor’s heat dissipation acceptably low at such high clock rates. As a consequence, Intel officially dumped its NetBurst products with frequencies above 4GHz. It’s good for Intel that desktop processors then took a different way of development. Instead of intensively increasing the clock rate, the CPU manufacturers chose the extensive approach by increasing the number of computation cores. If things remained unchanged, the Pentium 4 would lose its competitiveness against the rival products, but even now the senior processor models from AMD beat Pentiums 4 in a majority of tests.

Pentium M series processors have had a great appeal for PC enthusiasts since their arrival. Besides low heat dissipation these processors boast a very good performance thanks to which Pentium M-based notebooks have won universal recognition. Unfortunately, it was impossible to use this highly promising CPU in desktop computers until recently due to the lack of appropriate chipsets. Some time ago a few mainboard makers overcame Intel’s opposition and released several platforms that permitted to install a Pentium M in a desktop computer. These platforms were somewhat ill-targeted, however: based on the same chipsets for notebooks, they were not quite appropriate for desktops due to their limited functionality and performance. For example, take their single-channel memory controller – only the cheapest desktop computer systems of today offer single-channel memory access.

Fortunately, another opportunity for crossing the Pentium M series with desktop computers was found. Despite its close relation to the Pentium III, the Pentium M uses the Quad Pumped Bus, and the engineers from ASUS developed a special adapter that allows installing mobile CPUs of the Pentium M class into ordinary mainboards for Pentium 4 processors. We’re going to check this prodigious gadget in this review and see what performance the Pentium M can offer to you if used in a desktop PC. We will start with a short description of the Pentium M architecture.

The T61p from Lenovo

The T61p is the first widescreen ThinkPad mobile workstation, and the latest high-end offering from Lenovo. It comes with almost every feature a demanding business user could want, and is starting at a very reasonable price point below 1400 for the 14.1” model. This model has also gone under a number of changes from the previous generation, and in this ThinkPad T61p review you will find out how it stacks up.

The ThinkPad T61p comes in two sizes, one being 14.1” and the model being reviewed at 15.4”. The key difference between both these lines, besides screen size, is the memory size of the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M video card included with the system. You receive a 128MB card in the smaller 14.1” model, and double the memory at 256MB in the 15.4” model. The processor selection is the same, spanning from the Intel T7100 to T7700, memory from 1GB to 4GB, and hard drives from 60GB to 160GB in 5400 or 7200rpm flavors. Other options include a fingerprint reader, Bluetooth, Intel Turbo Memory, N-wireless, and an extended battery version.

When the GPU was put under load, the playing field evened out. Both laptops have roughly the same size heatsink/fan meaning they will dissipate energy just at roughly the same speed. Both laptops had GPU temps peaked around the 80-81C range, with the T61p slightly higher (though it's a much better card than the old X1400 in my T60). Another aspect some might notice is how quiet the new T61 series is under load. At first I was thinking it was a new fan design, but playing with tpfancontrol I noticed you only have 3 fan speeds instead of 7 on the T60. It is quieter under high load because the fan is limited to ~3300rpm, whereas the T60 can go upwards of ~4300rpm. Less noise yes, but also less peak airflow. Speeds 1-3 are roughly the same noise level, but the T61 (with its newer heatsink design) spends more time without the fans on at all.

Performance and Benchmarks: With the broad range of Core 2 Duo processors available, combined with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics, the T61p doesn’t fall short on performance. Even with its being targeted towards business applications, it has more than enough raw power for the latest games. Another fun fact for those curious about the video ram configuration, you will be happy to know this laptop has GDDR3 modules, Hynix hy5rs123235b to be exact. To keep system lag to a minimum, this particular configuration also had a 7200rpm Seagate hard drive. The following benchmarks are a testament to this business laptop’s shear power.

Alltel Wireless will get the GLIMMER by LG

Alltel Wireless will get the GLIMMER by LG, which is an all-touch phone and surely looks good. This one takes the 3.9 x 2 x 0.6 inches slim slider design of the AT&T Shine but instead of 2.2” display and a few keys below, fits 2.8” wide-angle unit with 240x400 pixels resolution! From the images leaked (which are from official LG press sheet) it can be seen that the home screen has the typical for LG shortcuts: menu, calls, messaging and phonebook, but we’ve no idea what the rest of the interface will look like … we hope Alltel won’t disappoint us, and will bring LG’s UI found in phones such as the Viewty, Prada, and the KF700, or at least a user experience somewhat close to theirs. Similar to the latter model, the new phone slides open to reveal standard numeric keypad, for dialing a number or text input. The LG GLIMMER’s main selling point is the combination of a large touch display (with haptic feedback - vibration) and a very well looking slim slider design, with metal parts. It is a CDMA/EV-DO phone (of course) with a 2-megapixel camera, a micro SD slot and Stereo Bluetooth.

AF-S 14-24 mm F2.8G ED

Nikon has announced a pair of new professional AF-S lenses, first comes the AF-S 14-24 mm F2.8G ED which promises to offer a huge field of view on the new FX format D3 digital SLR. The lens is made up of fourteen elements in eleven groups, two of which are ED glass, three a spherical. There's also a "Nano Crystal Coat" which features in all the lenses announced today, it's designed to cut down internal reflection within the lens which can be a particular problem with the reflective surface of a digital SLR sensor. Next is the AF-S 24-70 mm F2.8G ED a new slim line (by F2.8 lens standards) lens which will provide wide to just beyond standard field of view on the D3. Both lenses will be available this November, no pricing yet.

Nikon UK is pleased to announce two zoom NIKKOR lenses designed to maximize the potential of the advanced new FX format D3 digital SLR camera launched today. Fully compatible with existing DX-format Nikon DSL’s as well, they share fast f/2.8 apertures across the zoom range. The ultra wide-angle AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and the slim line AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, are designed for the exacting optical demands of professional use. “These new zoom NIKKORS offer photographers immense creative potential when combined with the new FX-format D3, but are equally useful for those using Nikon’s DX-format cameras too”, said Robert Cristina, Brand Manager, Nikon Professional Products Europe. “They are the first wide-angle lenses to incorporate Nikon’s unique Nano Crystal coat, that suppresses the ghost and flare that sometimes occurs with the reflective surfaces of digital sensors.”

AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED :The ultra wide-angle/fast aperture combination of the AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens is a world first*, and is highly adaptable for the tight spaces busy professional photographers often find themselves working in. The excellent optical quality of this 14-24mm lens, combined with excellent levels of detail contributes to brilliant, sharp results.
AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED The completely new standard zoom AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED complements the NIKKOR range of professional lenses. Much slimmer than its predecessor, (the AF-S Zoom-Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8) the new lens exhibits outstanding characteristics at wide settings where centre-to-peripheral resolution is a priority, making it ideal for landscape photography. At the 50-70mm setting, crisp details are displayed with excellent bake, making the lens highly suited for portraits.

Both lenses share Nikon’s unique Nano Crystal coat technology to minimize ghost and flare, with ED glass elements contributing to outstanding levels of resolution and contrast. Nikon’s precision Silent Wave Motor assures fast and quiet auto focus performance, with instant manual override possible. Both lenses are designed with high dust and moisture resistance, and include a rubber seal around the bayonet mount.

Ready Boost USB with up to 8GB capacity

Ready Boost is an operating system feature included with Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. It works by using flash memory, USB 2.0 drive, SD card, CompactFlash or any kind of portable massive flash storage as a drive for disk cache.

Ready Boost is also used to facilitate SuperFetch, an updated version of Windows XP's prefetcher which performs analysis of boot-time disk usage patterns and creates a cache which is used in subsequent system boots
Using Ready Boost-capable flash memory (NAND memory devices) for caching allows Windows Vista to service random disk reads with performance that is typically 80-100 times faster than random reads from traditional hard drives. This caching is applied to all disk content, not just the page file or system DLLs. Flash devices are typically slower than the hard drive for sequential I/O, so to maximize performance, Ready Boost includes logic to recognize large, sequential read requests and then allows these requests to be serviced by the hard drive.

When a compatible device is plugged in, the Windows AutoPlay dialog offers an additional option to use the flash drive to speed up the system; an additional "Ready Boost" tab is added to the drive's properties dialog where the amount of space to be used can be configured. 250 MB to 4 GB of flash memory can be assigned. Ready Boost encrypts, with AES-128, and compresses all data that is placed on the flash device; Microsoft has stated that a 2:1 compression ratio is typical, so that a 4 GB cache could contain upwards of 8 GB of data.
According to Jim Allchin, for future releases of Windows, Ready Boost will be able to use spare RAM on other networked Windows Vista PCs.

DCRP Review: Fuji FinePix S100fs

The Fuji FinePix S100fs ($799) is one of the more unique fixed-lens cameras on the market today. It features a larger-than-normal (2/3"), 11.1 Megapixel SuperCCD HR sensor, which (at least in theory) should give it better low light and high ISO performance than other compact cameras. The other "big" feature on the S100fs is its impressive lens: it covers an incredible range of 28 - 400 mm, and it has optical image stabilization, too.

Other drool-worthy features include a tilting 2.5" LCD display, a hot shoe and flash sync port, full manual controls, adjustable dynamic range, and advanced face detection.

All of this comes at a cost, though. The FinePix S100fs has a street price just under $700, which is as much as you'd pay for an entry-level digital SLR kit. To be fair, getting a high quality 28 - 400 lens on a D-SLR is an expensive proposition. Is the S100fs worth your hard-earned cash? Find out now in our review!

As is the case with many cameras these days, the FinePix S100fs had built-in memory, instead of a bundled memory card. The camera has 25MB of memory, which isn't a whole lot, considering its resolution (it holds just one RAW or five JPEGs). Thus, you'll want to buy a large memory card, and fast. The S100fs supports xD, SD, and SDHC media, and I'd stick with SD or SDHC, as they are generally faster (if you do get an xD card, make sure it's Type M+). I'd recommend a 2GB card to start with.

When it's time to charge the NP-140, just pop it into the included charger, and then plug the whole thing into the wall. It takes around 130 minutes to fully charge the battery. As you'd expect, Fuji includes a lens cap (with retaining strap) with the S100fs. You'll also find a lens hood in the box, which you may want to use when you're shooting outdoors.

FinePix S100FS

The great attractiveness of the FinePix S100FS is the extended Dynamic Range. Dynamic Range for digital cameras means the expression domain between bright areas and dark areas. In nature photography, there are many subjects with great difference between brightness and darkness, such as a bright sky against the dark sea. Such variation is difficult to express without an extended Dynamic Range. A narrow range causes over exposure or under exposure. The FinePix S100FS is the first digital camera with a closed-unit design to have an extended Dynamic Range (100%, 200%, 400%) similar to that of negative film, thanks to the newly developed 2/3-inch 11.1 megapixel Super CCD VIII "HR" and the new image processor "RP (Real Photo ) ProcessorIII". This camera prevents over exposure and under exposure, regardless of whether the subject is a landscape or a portrait. Take the beautiful photos you desire, from shots with clear modulation to those deep, fine photos. This is a function that nature photographers, who really need tonal expression more than anybody, simply cannot afford to miss.

Full review of the Samsung YP-S5

Design - Good The Samsung YP-S5 is a unique design for MP3 players, though it won't be so new to diehard Samsung fans. With its slide-out stereo speakers, the YP-S5 updates the Samsung YP-K5 player we saw more than a year ago, though the changes aren't too significant. We like the look of the new player better. While the K5 was a glossy obelisk, the S5 uses a glossy front with a soft touch black exterior around the rest of the player. The device is a bit smaller than its predecessor, and has a gentle angle to it, making it more visually appealing.
Interface - Good Samsung's interface is simple and pretty, but it could stand some improvement. First of all, browsing long lists of songs was strangely both jumpy and slow. The imterface jumps page to page, but doesn't accelerate quickly through letters. Second, the organization structure could use some rethinking. Samsung players mostly share the same interface, which keeps secondary functions like Bluetooth phone controls and the alarm clock features hidden under submenus. That makes sense on other models, perhaps, but we think the S5 might be more useful as a Bluetooth speakerphone and travel alarm clock than as a player, at least for some customers. These important features should be high-level menu options, while pictures and videos, which should be a secondary feature on this device, could be buried deeper.
Features - Very good The Samsung YP-S5 includes more features than it needs, but has some innovative ideas packed in that work surprisingly well. The player can handle music, JPEG photos and MP4 videos, and videos looked fine on the small, low-res screen, but this is more of a novelty act than the S5's real purpose. The alarm clock was a good feature, and we liked being able to set up multiple alarms on the device. But we wish we could have chosen different songs for each alarm. Instead, you assign one song as the alarm track, and that's the only song that will play on time, besides the included alarm tones. The Samsung YP-S5 also has some of the Bluetooth phone features we saw on the Samsung YP-P2. When paired with a Bluetooth phone, the YP-S5 will not only stop playback during a call, it will actually let you answer, using the built-in microphone and your normal headphones to take the call. Also, the phone packs a primitive dial pad so you can even dial a call from the YP-S5, which then acts as a handsfree device for your phone. When the speakers are open, you can use the S5 as a Bluetooth speakerphone, which is an especially neat trick, and it worked pretty well in our tests.
Transfer - Good Samsung's transfer software has not improved since we last saw it. The interface is confusing, and not at all intuitive. Transfers are painfully slow, especially when you have to encode a video for the device. The Samsung Media Studio has a cheesy mood reading tool that supposedly analyzes your music for your mood, but more time and effort should have gone into making an intuitive, pleasant interface that was easy to manage for music transfers and playback instead of these gimmicks. Of course, you can simply use Windows Media Player instead, but if Samsung, or Microsoft for that matter, wants to compete with Apple's iPod / iTunes one-two punch, serious thought needs to go into the synchronization and sideloading half.

The professional Nikon D 'single digit' series

The professional Nikon D 'single digit' series of digital SLR's started life back in June 1999 with the groundbreaking D1. Groundbreaking because it was the digital SLR that broke Kodak's stranglehold on the digital SLR market and fundamentally brought prices down to a level which most professionals could afford (around the US$5,500 mark). Since then we have seen a steady progression in the evolution of this line of cameras. Whilst the core values of a high quality full-size body with integrated grip have remained constant, the line split into two halves (indicated by the X and H suffixes), one targeted at high resolution photography the other high speed sports type photography (lower resolution but faster continuous shooting). It's been almost three years since Nikon introduced a completely new digital SLR with a new sensor (the D2X) and there had been much anticipation that Nikon's next move would be a full-frame chip.

And so it was, with the introduction last August of the new 'FX format' D3, featuring a 36 x 23.9 mm 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor as well as a vast array of new features which absolutely raise it another notch above previous single digit Nikon DSLRs. Important headline improvements include high sensitivity support by default, up to ISO 6400 with 25600 available as a boost option, 14-bit A/D conversion, a new standard image processor, a new shutter, new auto focus sensor, focus tracking by color, nine frames per second continuous, dual compact flash support, DX lens support (albeit at lower resolution) with automatic cropping and a 3.0" 922,000 pixel LCD monitor (which it has to be said is lovely).

Some will undoubtedly question Nikon for 'only' delivering twelve megapixels on their first full frame digital SLR, all we can presume by looking at past model line history is that this camera is designed for speed (both in sensitivity, auto-focus and continuous shooting). Our first comment on seeing the D3 in the late summer of last year was 'where's the 'H' suffix?', something echoed many times in the months following announcement by commentators and photographers. Although Nikon remains tight-lipped about its future plans it seems fair to assume that Photokina will bring an EOS 1DS Mark III competitor (with higher resolution but without the high speed shooting).
